What the Weather Is Really Like in Utah

A question I get often is what the weather is like in Utah. If you are thinking about moving here, it makes sense to wonder what the seasons really feel like. When my family moved to Utah, we were excited but honestly had no idea what to expect. The reality is that Utah gives you four true seasons, each with its own personality, and that variety is one of the things many people end up loving the most. If you are trying to decide whether Utah’s climate fits your lifestyle, here is what living through the seasons in Salt Lake City is actually like.

Summer in Utah is one of my favorite times of the year. The mornings are cool and refreshing, usually in the fifties or sixties. By the afternoon the temperatures warm up into the eighties or nineties. Some days reach one hundred, but it never stays that hot for long. The dry air makes a huge difference because the heat feels lighter and more comfortable compared to humid places like Florida. The evenings cool off beautifully, which makes it easy to spend time outside. If you want cooler weather, Park City and Heber Valley are usually about ten degrees lower than Salt Lake, which gives you a nice break from the heat.

Fall in Utah is a season you will fall in love with. The mountains turn bright red, orange and gold and it honestly looks like a postcard. Mornings are crisp but not cold. Daytime temperatures hover in the sixties, sometimes the seventies. Many years the first snow arrives around Halloween, although it usually melts quickly. If you enjoy fall colors, you will be amazed at how pretty it gets here.

Winter is the season people wonder about the most. Snow usually begins in November and can continue through March or even April some years. Temperatures vary from the thirties during the day to the teens at night. In the city the snow often melts between storms, so you do not always have snow on the ground all winter. The ski resorts hold snow much longer and many open around Thanksgiving. If you enjoy winter sports, you will love it here. If cold weather is not your thing, winter might feel long, so it is something to think about before you move.

Spring in Utah is playful and unpredictable. You will get warm sunny days in the sixties or seventies and then a surprise snowfall the next week. Mornings stay crisp and afternoons slowly warm up as you get into late April and May. If you love gardening, make sure to wait until after Mother’s Day to plant because late season snow happens often.

Utah’s weather gives you a lifestyle filled with variety. Warm summer nights, beautiful fall leaves, winter skiing and fresh spring mornings all add something special to life here. Because Utah is dry, the heat feels easier to handle and the cold does not bite as hard as it does in humid climates. Most people who move here end up loving the rhythm of the seasons and how much it adds to their everyday life.
